The National Weather Service climate station at Sanford, the closest official station to Deltona, normally records 115.4 days a year at or above 90 degrees, with a July average high of 92.7 degrees. A battery here spends roughly a third of the year cooking.
The good news is that batteries rarely fail without warning. They give off a sequence of small signals, and every one of them is easier to act on in a driveway than on the shoulder of Howland Boulevard at midnight.
Why Florida heat shortens battery life
Heat accelerates the internal chemical activity that eventually destroys a lead-acid battery, and it drives off the electrolyte the battery needs to function. That is why AAA describes heat and vibration together as the two conditions that lead to "internal breakdown and eventual failure," and why the organization expects heat to "take its toll on vehicles and their occupants" through the summer months.

Nearer the coast, Daytona Beach normally sees 19.5 days a month at or above 90 in July, with a record of 102 degrees from July 15, 1981.
Under-hood temperatures run far above ambient air. A car parked on asphalt outside a plaza on Deltona Boulevard in mid-afternoon subjects its battery to conditions no manufacturer rating anticipates for months at a stretch.
1. The engine cranks slowly, especially first thing in the morning
A slow crank is the single most reliable early sign of a failing battery. The starter draws the largest current demand the electrical system ever sees, so a battery losing capacity reveals it there first.
Listen for the change rather than the absolute sound. If the engine used to catch instantly and now labors for half a second before firing, that half second is the warning. It usually appears on the first start of the day, after the battery has sat unused overnight.
2. Headlights dim at idle and brighten when you rev
