A vehicle goes from moving to immovable in about four seconds, and the four seconds after that usually decide whether it costs a phone call or a recovery. The instinct is to press the accelerator. In Central Florida sand, that instinct is close to the worst available option.

Why does a car sink so fast in Volusia County sand?
Because the soil here contains almost nothing that binds it together. The USDA soil survey describes the Paola series, mapped across this part of Central Florida, as having a clay content of "0 to 5 percent" and a silt content of "0 to 5 percent." Without clay or silt, the grains have nothing holding them to one another, so they behave more like dry rice than like dirt.
The Astatula series that runs through the ridge country including Deltona is described the same way: "very deep, excessively drained, very rapidly permeable soils on uplands of the South Central Florida Ridge," formed "in eolian and marine sands," with drainage rated as "excessively drained" and permeability as "very rapid."
That combination explains the speed of it. Spinning tires do not claw through loose sand toward firmer ground, because there is no firmer ground within reach — the sand is deep. Each rotation excavates rather than propels, and the vehicle settles onto its frame in seconds.
What should you do in the first thirty seconds?
Stop accelerating and get out to look. Every additional second of wheelspin digs the tire deeper and removes options that were available a moment earlier.
Check three things: how far the tires have sunk relative to the sidewall, whether the frame or bumper is resting on sand, and whether the ground ahead is any firmer than the ground you are on. A vehicle sitting on its frame is already past the point of self-recovery, and knowing that immediately saves an hour of effort.
Straighten the wheels. Angled front tires plow sideways into sand and add resistance exactly where you need the least of it.
How do you clear the tires and rebuild traction?
Dig a ramp, then give the tire something solid to climb onto. Clear sand from in front of each drive wheel in the direction you intend to travel and taper it into a shallow slope rather than a vertical wall.
The National Park Service, which regulates driving on sand at Cape Cod National Seashore, publishes a required equipment list that reads like a recovery kit for exactly this situation: a tire pressure gauge that "must register to 5 p.s.i. or lower," a "heavy-duty shovel equal to a military folding shovel," a jack support board measuring "10 x 12 x 1.5" inches, and a tow strap, rope, chain, or cable "at least 14 feet long." The same list notes that "a winch does not qualify as a towing device" and that donut spare tires are prohibited.
Floor mats, cardboard, or plywood wedged under the drive wheels can substitute for traction boards. Then accelerate gently in the highest gear the vehicle will pull from, and stop the moment the wheels break loose rather than spin.
