Drivers ask this question in the worst possible circumstances: the car is dead on the shoulder, a truck is on its way, and someone wants to know whether it is the right kind of truck. The honest answer is that the choice is usually already made for you, and it is written in your owner's manual rather than decided by preference.
Both methods are legitimate. A wheel lift and a flatbed each solve a specific problem, and the deciding factor is almost always which wheels drive your vehicle, whether the drivetrain is intact, and how much ground clearance the car has. What follows is the manufacturer guidance behind that decision, plus the practical realities of a breakdown in Volusia County.
What is wheel lift towing?
Wheel lift towing raises one axle off the ground with a metal yoke that cradles the tires, leaving the other two wheels rolling on the pavement. The yoke contacts only the tires, which is what separates a modern wheel lift from the old sling systems that pressed against bumpers and suspension components.
Manufacturers treat it as an approved method when the lifted axle is the driven one. Mazda's owner's manual is explicit: "A towed FWD vehicle should have its drive wheels (front wheels) off the ground. If excessive damage or other conditions prevent this, use wheel dollies." For a rear-wheel drive car, the manual reverses the instruction, stating that "a towed RWD vehicle should have its drive wheels (rear wheels) off the ground."
The same manuals rule out the older equipment entirely. Mazda instructs owners: "Do not tow with sling-type equipment. This could damage your vehicle. Use wheel-lift or flatbed equipment." That sentence is worth remembering, because it places wheel lift and flatbed side by side as the two acceptable options rather than ranking one above the other.
What is flatbed towing?
Flatbed towing loads the entire vehicle onto a hydraulic deck so that no wheel touches the road during transport. Nothing in the drivetrain rotates, nothing in the suspension carries road load, and the vehicle arrives in the same position it was winched into.
That property is exactly why manufacturers reach for it when something is wrong. Mazda's guidance for a damaged vehicle is direct: "If the drive train has been damaged, transport the vehicle on a flatbed truck." The manual applies the same logic to a mechanical fault most drivers never consider, stating that "if the parking brake cannot be released when towing the vehicle, transport the vehicle with all front and rear wheels raised off the ground."
Flatbeds also handle the cases where geometry, not mechanics, is the constraint: lowered vehicles, long front overhangs, exotic bodywork, and cars that have already been damaged in a collision and cannot be trusted to roll straight.
Which one does your drivetrain require?
All-wheel drive removes the choice. Mazda states plainly: "Always tow an AWD vehicle with all four wheels off the ground," and explains the consequence of ignoring it — "towing an AWD vehicle with either the front or rear wheels on the ground is dangerous as the drive train could be damaged, or the vehicle could trail away from the tow truck and cause an accident."
For two-wheel drive vehicles, the rule is simpler than it sounds: lift the wheels that drive the car. A front-wheel drive sedan travels with its front wheels in the yoke. A rear-wheel drive coupe travels with its rear wheels in the yoke. Where that is impossible, manuals point to wheel dollies under the remaining axle, which achieves the same result as a flatbed by taking every driven wheel out of contact with the road.
